Contour path and Voelklip walk

The walkers who tackled the contour path , via the dam and on to Voelklip, were blessed with wonderful crisp clear weather on their 6.8km hike today.  Flowers were in relatively short supply, but the fynbos, nevertheless looked healthy and ready to put on a good Spring show.

Looking down on Hermanus, one is reminded of how much development is taking place and is left wondering where it will all end.  Will the bypass road go ahead?  Nobody wants it and it would certainly destroy the lower slopes of our beautiful mountains!

A Morning of School Rugby

This morning we enjoyed watching Jordan and Keagan (David and Tanja’s sons) representing Rondebosch Prep against Durbanville.  They played for the Under 12 B and Under 9 B teams respectively and both fared well.  Jordan’s team won 22-15, and Keagan’s drew without any score.  It was a pleasure to participate and we left very proud of the way both boys played.

Oak Valley

When we walked at Oak Valley last year we thought it was wonderful.  This year, despite trying to take a different route and getting a bit lost, it was equally good, but with the added advantage of being able to enjoy a good lunch at The Pool Room after the exercise.

John was our leader and nobody could blame him for taking the wrong path, as the signs were confusing at best.  It didn’t matter though as the farm is such a wonderful mix of field, forest and orchard, that no matter where one goes, it is still a great hiking experience and sixteen of us thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Pool Room is a beautiful mix of rustic and modern, with a well stocked deli at hand to whet one’s appetite.  The wines were, as ever, top class and the food was good, although some veggies would have been appreciated.  Man is not a carnivore, after all.

Dinner at the Marine with Creation

Last night, which happened to be our 46th wedding anniversary, was spent with friends at The Marine enjoying a wonderful dinner, paired with some of Creation’s best wines.  The food was outstanding and beautifully presented and the wines were equally impressive.  To add to the enjoyment of the latter, we were privileged to have Riedel glassware, matched to each cultivar.  It certainly made a difference!

Fynbos Splendour

We all know that a visit to Namaqualand in Spring will present endless vistas of wonderful colourful daisies and succulents, but how many of us are aware that a walk in the Western Cape will be amazing at almost any time of the year.  Below are some images taken at random from various walks in all seasons.  They illustrate that one does not have to look at individual blooms to see real beauty, but that it is all around us and is invariably truly spectacular!  We cannot deny that we live in a garden and must do everything we can to protect it for future generations.

Flower Farm Walk

Elsa was to have led our walk today at Flower Farm, behind Grootbos.  Unfortunately she was not well, but 12 of us went ahead.  At the start, the weather looked to be closing in, however, it cleared once we reached the farm and we set off in perfect conditions under the able guidance of Ambrose.  We covered around 7.5 kilometres in varied terrain.

The veld was magnificent with many species not normally seen in Fernkloof, present.  Not only that, but the lack of any vegetation above one metre in height made for great panoramas across the local mountains and to the sea beyond.  There was also the opportunity to walk through a fine section of montane forest, where I was particularly pleased to see a pair of Blue-Mantled Crested Flycatchers.  It was a wonderful outing to an area that will no doubt beckon come Spring when the flowers should be really good!

Picnic on the Palmiet River

Today, to celebrate Mothers’ Day, we met Andrew, Gillian, Jamie and Lexi for a picnic in the Kogelberg.  I remembered a beach on the banks of the Palmiet River, but it was obviously a lot further than I recalled, so we ended up having our lunch on the rocky banks after a fairly long walk, and never reached the beach.  Not that it really mattered.  We had the place to ourselves and the weather was glorious with absolutely no wind, so we had a really pleasant time, as well as some good exercise.
