Today, being Madiba’s birthday, the Cliff Path Management Group organised a clean-up in the area of the path near Siever’s Punt. Regrettably not many people attended, but those who did, got stuck in and cleared quite a bit of invasive vegetation. Hopefully this will spur those responsible for path maintenance to do more and try to achieve the standards we set. Citizens joining hands for the good of their community should be encouraged and only by spreading the word, will we be able to attract sufficient volunteers to really make a difference. Anina took the photographs.
We decided to do what Anina had referred to as the Restio walk, as it leads through very good examples of the many Restios that can be seen in Fernkloof. Unfortunately, Anina was not with us, so we were not able to identify these interesting plants, but we had a good outing, nevertheless.
It was a pleasure to welcome Ann Mapham to our group and we hope that she will become a regular walker. Sandy led the group and we went first round Lemoenkop before climbing Adder’s Ladder, then along the jeep track and down over Kanonkop.
Our walk on Wednesday, from Fernkloof Visitors’ Centre, over the mountain and down to the Plaaskombuis in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley was attended by 10 walkers. The weather was excellent and Mick ensured that we were aware of all the relevant landmarks as we progressed up to the jeep track and then down through the Hamilton Russel olive groves and vineyards, frequently pointing out similarities with Tuscany and reminding us that we could enjoy this spectacular scenery right on our doorstep without bothering with visas or flights! We even had the advantage of African wildlife as we were entertained by a large troop of baboons, which graced the rocky outcrops above the valley.
The Plaaskombuis farmstall and restaurant is adjacent to Brent’s packshed and water cress farm, so we availed ourselves of Sandy’s presence and she kindly showed us around this fascinating enterprise. The meal at the Plaaskombuis was good and wholesome and we all agreed that we had had a very good outing.
