Dot’s Dash, April 2023

This morning 9 Hurriers had a most enjoyable, albeit exhausting, walk over Dot’s Dash in the Kogelberg. The weather was sublime, cool with sunshine and no wind, so we could not have done better. Our ascent was punctuated by many stops to look at the Fynbos birds that were around enjoying the morning warmth. We saw Cape Rockjumpers, Orange-breasted Sunbirds, Ground Woodpeckers, Familiar Chats, Cape Buntings, Red-winged Starlings, Neddickies, Cape Grassbirds, Cape Weavers, Cape White-eyes, Victorin’s Warblers, Yellow Bishops and a lone Black Sparrow-Hawk.

The Fynbos was beautiful, as usual, as attested by the images below, but it was sad to see the extent of the poaching in the fields of Erica pillansii.

We stumbled back, really struggling with the steep downhill sections which took their toll of old knees and addled brains! There is no doubt that age adds considerable challenges to mountain hiking!
